The Hair Behind the Win: Barb Thompson on Betty Gilpin’s Emmy Awards Look

09/08/2026

“GLOW” fans got a real treat this weekend. Betty Gilpin, reunited with former co-star Alison Brie (as dates no less!) for the Emmys (formerly “Creative Arts Emmys”) where she wound up winning for Outstanding Guest Actress In A Comedy Series, for her turn as matriarch (???) Sarah Westcott Warren on the excellent AppleTV show “Widow’s Bay.” Gilpin even thanked Brie in her incredible acceptance speech — which was actually a very charming poem! The win was a long overdue recognition for Gilpin’s immense talents.

Equally triumphant, but certainly more trivial? Gilpin’s look! She wore a bold red dress and her hair down, set in a deep part with one side artfully tucked just so behind an ear. With the expert help of Barb Thompson, Gilpin gave us a total throwback moment.

Thompson tells us, “I wanted to create a 90s inspired supermodel blowout with a deep side part. The goal was big beautiful volume with soft movement and a polished finish that still felt effortless.” Keep reading to find out how it all came together.

Get the Look:

  1. “I started with RŌZ Root Lift Spray to give the roots lift and create a strong foundation for the blowout. I followed with RŌZ Milk Hair Serum through the lengths to add softness and shine while protecting the hair.
  2. Using the Dyson Airwrap Coanda2x Mult-Styler and Dryer, I created a full voluminous blowout with lots of movement and a beautiful bend through the ends.
  3. I finished with RŌZ Santa Lucia Styling Oil to add shine and smoothness while keeping the hair touchable.”

We should all be like Betty. If there were any doubt, take a look at a viral post featuring a snippet of her acceptance speech. (Read her book for more, and you won’t be disappointed.)
