Never mind that she’s on currently on trial. Cardi B is America’s sweetheart. And, at this point, every moment she’s on the stand seems to be memed. None more so than when an attorney was confused by her wig wearing, commenting that she had short black hair the day before and then long blonde hair. Cardi laughed and delivered a perfectly-timed “they’re wigs.” The internet (us included) swooned.
We also knew what we had to do. The Tease ran to IG and got in touch with Cardi’s longtime hairstylist, Tokyo Stylez, the one installing and styling these stunning wigs, to see if she would be willing to chat. Fortunately, she was! Read on for our quick Q&A.
The Tease: How are you feeling about the response to Cardi’s wigs online?
Tokyo Stylez: The response has been nothing but great. TBH I didn’t think the latest looks we’ve done recently would become such a viral moment.
You’ve changed up the looks pretty dramatically with these courtroom appearance wigs, but which look has been your favorite?
Tokyo Stylez: So far, I’d have to say the blonde wig was for sure my fav court wig.
How much prep time do you have between wigs? Do you know that she’s going to change them out fully each day?
Tokyo Stylez: Most of the time I just bring lots of options or I just create something right there on the spot. Sometimes I have only 2 hours to build from scratch color — add additional bundles for fullness, cut, install, style. Most times we don’t know which wig to do until wardrobe is decided. That could be day before or day of.
What is the key to prepping for these kinds of dramatic changes so that natural hair isn’t damaged?
Tokyo Stylez: If using adhesive make sure you’re not putting glue directly to hair. Skin only. And always make sure your hair and scalp are moisturized. And make sure your taking care of your skin in between wig changes.
What are your go-to haircare products for wigs?
Tokyo Stylez: I pretty much love and stand by got2b Glued. I use all their products on a regular basis and have done so since I was in high school. I really love their products. (Editor’s note: Tokyo is a got2b ambassador.)
