Camila Mendes Channels Late ’80s Cool-Girl Hair With ‘Masters of the Universe’ Premiere Bob

05/23/2026

For everyone who thinks that bobs are boring, let Camila Mendes at the LA premiere of her new film, the much-anticipated, “Masters of the Universe,” serve as an example that that’s simply not true. Mendes has been rocking a bob for a minute (see the Met Gala a few weeks back) but this look was shorter and more retro-inspired — with an exaggerated shape that was impossible to miss.

Editorial and celebrity hairstylist Lauren Palmer Smith was responsible for both of these recent looks, so, naturally, we got in touch.

Palmer Smith says, “For this LA premiere of ‘Masters of the universe,’ we wanted to lean into a bit of that late 80s early 90s glamour. To keep on theme of the period of when ‘Masters of the Universe’ was very popular. But I wanted to keep it in an old Hollywood, very LA premiere style.” She made sure to mention that although she created the red carpet style, Mendes’ “beautiful warm bronze brown hair color” was done by Matt Rez, and the bob haircut was done by Buddy Porter.

Read on for the exact products Palmer Smith used to get Mendes ready.

  1. “I used my favorite Bumble and bumble. thickening mousse, and set it on velcro rollers for the perfect bouncy structure.
  2. Then I added curls with a 1 inch barrel curling iron to give it a polished finish.
  3. And loaded it with my favorite Bumble and bumble. hairspray, Spray de Mode!”
