Antoinette Beenders, Aveda SVP Global Artistry, doesn’t do boring hair. Throughout her career, Beenders has always had a flair for the theatrical, the bold, severe, even the absurd. Her hair design for the Bad Binch TongTong SS27 runway show was thrilling but not surprising if you’re in the know.
Beenders’ runway hairstyles were created to reflect designer Terrence Zhou’s own avant garde aesthetic and just like the designer, she and the Aveda Artists hair team embraced extremes. Hair was transformed into an oblong shape atop the head, elongating everything into something entirely extraterrestrial-looking.
She exclusively tells The Tease, “Bad Binch TongTong is known for strong shapes, so I wanted to translate that into the hair. The pieces he showed this season were huge and we needed the hair to complement that. It was just a matter of how big we could go!”
“Underneath that big hair we had lots of padding,” she explains. “The Aveda artist team and I hand-sewed these bundles of padding together the night before to have the hairstyles built on.”
She shares that she’d been connected with Zhou for months about the show and knew she “wanted to amp up the shape.”
She tells us, “What’s so great is that he intrinsically trusts me to translate his vision, and his vision was to go big. He’s not really a natural look kind of guy. He wants a statement. As a hairdresser, it’s a dream job to be able to work with someone so creative and willing to push boundaries.”

- Beenders started this look by lightly dampening the hair and applying Aveda’s One For All Leave-In Elixir from root to tip, prepping with 25 benefits in 1.
- Next, she began slicking the hair back with a fine- tooth comb, angling upward to begin creating the sculptural feel. Using Aveda’s Air Control and Control Force Hair Spray, she liberally applied to the hair and used a blow dryer upward to continue slicking the hair back into the desired position.
- Padding was secured underneath to keep the alien-inspired updo in its place, and the ends of the hair were secured at the top with a small elastic before being tucked down and pinned into the back of the updo.
- The look was finished with more Control Force Hairspray, locking in the style for the runway.
