“Buffy the Vampire Slayer” fans didn’t get their reboot, but they did get a reunion between its stars, Sarah Michelle Gellar and David Boreanaz, at this year’s Emmys. The iconic on-screen couple even poked fun at never knowing where their characters’ story would go. It was, and is, thrilling.
In a nod to the nostalgia of it all, Gellar slayed in a dress from Buffy’s heyday. Her hairstylist, and frequent collaborator, Justine Marjan says it was “a vintage Versace from the 90’s” and that she “loved how sleek and chic the dress felt with a gorgeous plunging back.” When it came to the hairstyle they’d opt for Marjan shares, “I knew I wanted her hair off her face and loved the idea of a low pony cascading down the plunging back.”
Sarah Michelle Gellar historians, myself included, clocked that the look was reminiscent of her 1999 Emmys appearance in which she also wore back baring dress with a long blonde ponytail (although, clearly high vs. low). Was this on purpose?
As it turns out, no. Marjan tells The Tease, “It wasn’t homage to that but I love the similarities!”
Keep reading for the steps Marjan took to create this style, including the exact TRESemmé and BELLAMI products she used.
