If anyone knows how to make headlines at a red carpet, it’s Billy Porter–even if the carpet’s blue. Somehow though the Pose star topped himself at the Critics’ Choice Awards. Nominated for Best Actor in a Drama Series, Porter did not come to play, wearing the evening’s most unexpected accessory: butterflies!
“Inspired by the free-spiritedness of David Bowie and the 1970’s disco era,” Porter’s Hogan McLaughlin custom jumpsuit (not a gown!) stood out on the carpet with its two-toned silk and strapless bodice.
However, the real star of the look was Porter’s butterfly tattoos. Serving “Fashion Gumby Butterfly Realness,” hairstylist Anna Bernabe not only groomed Porter’s hair for the night, but she hand painted the beautiful butterflies as well.
The butterflies go with Porter’s personal “theme for 2020, which is being released from the bondage of masculinity and flying free.”
“Just like the beautiful ladies from Pose, we are often born into one stage of life and then cocoon into an incubation of self-discovery, transformation, and acceptance, ultimately being released into freedom as beautiful creatures,” the actor says about the butterflies.
Complimenting the colorful insects on his body was Porter’s neon yellow nails. Nail artist Vanessa Sanchez McCullough titled the nail art SHATTERED because “Billy has shattered all of the stereotypes, and [she] wanted to make a set that represented him and complimented his outfit.” That she did!
