Colorist to the stars, Matt Rez loves a gloss. For his regulars, including Florence Pugh, Dua Lipa, Penelope Cruz, Addison Rae and more, a gloss can be just the thing to add shine and dimension, not to mention protect their custom color from fading in the sun.
If you specialize in color but aren’t offering glossing services, you may be missing out. The Tease connected with Rez about all things glosses and he spilled, including the epres product he swears by to maximize the results. Read on for the reveal.
The Tease: Why do you recommend a gloss specifically for summer?
Matt Rez: In short, the increased sun exposure in summer will cause your color to fade. A gloss will add another layer of pigment or clear coat over and just below the hair cuticle to help prevent color from fading. A pigmented gloss can also be formulated to neutralize unwanted warm tones or ‘brassiness’ as your color fades.
What is a clear gloss?
Rez: For those who don’t want any pigment, a clear gloss has no level or tone and will just add shine and reflectivity to either ‘virgin’ or colored hair. I love this for summer!
What is a color gloss?
Rez: A color gloss is a demi permanent color that that comes in a liquid, gel and or creme form and needs a processing solution to activate. Being minimally alkaline, it penetrates through and sits right under the cuticle layer of the hair.
It fades faster than permanent color, which penetrates deeper, and typically lasts for a good 6-8 weeks — about 20-ish washes.
How can clients make their gloss last longer?
Rez: To really get longest-lasting gloss results, make sure to prioritize hair health first and foremost! The healthier the hair structure from the inside out, the longer and better it can host a gloss. Using a bond repair treatment is essential, and I add epres Bond Repair Treatment to all of my glosses — color or clear.
This product strengthens the disulfide bonds in hair, so there’s more of an even structure for pigmented or clear glosses to penetrate. Mixing epres Bond Repair Treatment into the gloss formula transforms damaged hair, literally repairing it while the gloss is depositing!

What hair types can get a gloss?
Rez: All hair types who want to enhance their shine or color tones and or those who want to correct unwanted warm tones can use a hair gloss.
Is there anyone who shouldn’t use hair gloss?
Rez: Extremely damaged, breaking hair can grab a gloss inconsistently since the hair structure is compromised and pigments in the gloss penetrate differently in the most damaged areas. This hair needs to be repaired to have an even grab of pigmented glosses. This is when epres Bond Repair Treatment comes to the rescue to transform damaged hair and ensure a beautiful gloss.
How often should you get a hair gloss?
Rez: I suggest a gloss every 6-8 weeks. It’s time for a new gloss when you see color fading and looking hollow, and depth, tone and shine is needed.
