It’s no secret that bobs are one of the trendiest haircuts of the moment. From the red carpet to our social media feeds, bobs of all styles—textured, square, blunt, French, and Old Hollywood—have been popping up everywhere. So much so, that it’s pretty safe to say that short haircuts won’t be going anywhere anytime soon.
If you’re a stylist that’s wanting to achieve the perfect bob for your client, there is one essential that you’ll definitely want to have in your styling arsenal: hair extensions. While there’s a common misconception that extensions are just for clients wanting a long hair transformation, the reality is that they can be amazing for adding volume and thickness for short hair, particularly bobs. Not to mention, if your client is wanting to experiment with different hairstyles without waiting for their bob to grow out, hair extensions are the perfect solution.
However, it’s important to note that adding extensions to short hair for fullness is very different than adding them for length. That’s why we tapped NY-based extensionist and Remi Cachet brand ambassador Sarah Ashley to share her best tips and tricks for styling bobs with extensions . Keep scrolling for her insights.
On the appeal of using hair extensions to enhance a bob and other short hairstyles: “Hair extensions can be used for much more than just length. They can be used to add volume, texture, dimension, and even color to a bob or other short styles. I always like to incorporate extensions for these styles in order to add some extra volume, especially at the sides to really give that fullness to the look.”
On the minimum length needed to wear extensions when working with shorter-haired clients: “Ideally, hair should be at least 4-5 inches long to comfortably blend extensions, though Remi Cachet’s Nano Tips or Mini Tips can be applied even to shorter hair due to their discreet attachment style.”
On the types of hair extensions that are most suitable for working with clients with a bob: “Tape-in extensions are ideal for a seamless, natural finish, while weft extensions can work well for those wanting added density—so it really just depends what the client is looking for with their bob. I like to use the Remi Cachet 12” Elegance Full Weft for adding thickness to thin-haired bobs, due to its 18” width which means it can be custom fitted for closer-to-face application. Clip-ins are also a great temporary solution for clients looking for flexibility in their style without the longer-term commitment.”
On her advice for stylists that struggle with blending hair extensions when working with short hair: “Blending can be more challenging with short hair due to the contrast in length, especially if it’s a blunt bob. Stylists should opt for high-quality extensions and ensure strategic placement, feathered cutting, and layering for a seamless integration. My favorite to use are the Remi Cachet Elegance Ultra Tips—they offer a precise application and fan out from the bond to really impact volume and length whilst still customizing where on the head you want them to lay for seamless blending.
On her best tips and techniques for styling bobs with extensions: “To style a bob with extensions, focus on texturizing techniques — soft waves, blunt cuts with hidden layers, and heat styling with proper blending.”
On her advice for stylists who want to use hair extensions to assist their clients with growing out their bobs: “Extensions can make the transition phase more manageable by maintaining shape and volume. Utilizing extensions can provide a natural look while allowing the client’s natural hair to grow underneath, reducing awkward in-between lengths.
