Hairstylists are so much more than just the talented magicians who transform hair. These days, they’ve increasingly become “unofficial therapists” for each and every person that takes a seat in their chair. But, with so much of their time devoted towards helping others not only look good and feel good, we can’t help but wonder: who’s looking out for stylists and their own mental health?
As reported by L’Oréal Professionnel, 65% of hairstylists have experienced anxiety, depression, or burnout in their careers. For this very reason, the professional haircare brand has teamed up with the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) to launch Head Up, a new initiative working to provide hairstylists with free and accessible mental health resources.
With mental health continuing to be a growing and ongoing concern for hairstylists, the Head Up initiative hopes to raise awareness of the mental health challenges faced by the stylist community and provide them with the education and strategies to better care for their mental wellbeing.
To do so, L’Oréal Professionnel will be providing access to four modules designed to provide stylists with tools to address anxiety, burnout, or depression relating to their professional career. The modules included are:
- Module 1: Mental Health ABC’s—Learn how to recognize stress, anxiety, depression, and burnout in you and your coworkers.
- Module 2: Self care. Learn how to create a routine that works for you.
- Module 3: Setting Boundaries. Reduce work stress by setting boundaries with L’Oréal’s list of prepared, professional statements and tips.
- Module 4: Summary & key takeaways.
For those interested, Head Up will be available online through L’Oréal Professionnel’s website, YouTube, and on the L’Oréal learning platform, ACCESS (you will need to register for an account, if you don’t already have one!).
