We’re all collectively dying to meet an Oscar nominee, right? Well, on this episode of Volume Up by The Tease, you can! Traci Loader is a special makeup effects artist who has worked on productions like Infinity Pool, The Witch, and most recently, Nosferatu, as Makeup Designer/Makeup Department Head (yes, she did get to personally work with THE Lily-Rose Depp).
We got to chat with Traci about all things makeup and what it’s like to work on set, and it’s safe to say our Host, Jeffrey Lunnen, was geeking out!
Traci’s career started with a little bit of uncertainty but a passion for makeup and artistry. After working on a few TV commercials and Video B movies, her time came when she started working on The Witch and The Lighthouse, two films directed by Robert Eggers.
However, booking jobs didn’t mean Traci’s time for learning was over. During her first few movies, she practiced prosthetics on anyone who would let her. Like most careers, Traci’s came with lots of trial and error as she spent years self-teaching and learning from the people around her.
The blood, sweat, and tears (literally) paid off because Traci is now an Oscar Nominee for her work on Nosferatu. In this episode, Traci explains what it was like to work with her good friend and director, Robert Egger, on this spooky period piece. From elaborate details that most viewers wouldn’t even notice to huge makeup decisions, every aspect was meticulously chosen.
On this episode, we cover Traci’s biggest challenges, best moments on set, what it’s like to be a woman in a male-dominated industry, and what a typical day working in film looks like!
Big things are still to come for Traci as she is set to begin working on the set of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds soon! To learn more about what it takes to be an Oscar-nominated makeup artist, or if you’re just a movie buff, check out the full Volume Up by The Tease episode for more!
