In early January, actress and former talk show host, Ricki Lake took to Instagram to share a very personal struggle with the world. For nearly 30 years, the 51-year-old has been dealing with hair loss, which she describes as having been “debilitating, embarrassing, painful, scary, depressing, lonely, all the things.”
From constantly teasing and dyeing her hair to wearing extensions and wigs, many factors have contributed to Lake’s hair loss, which began shortly after portraying the iconic role of Tracy Turnblad in 1988’s Hairspray.
The actress previously struggled to accept the state that her hair was in, causing her to try everything she could. “I was super self-conscious and uncomfortable. I’ve been to many doctors, gotten steroid shots in my head, taking all the supplements and then some,” the star shared.
However, Lake is no longer letting her hair loss hold her back, and she is instead embracing her new buzzcut. Going from “Hairspray to Hairless,” she is now using her platform to inspire others to embrace their own hair loss journey and join her in feeling “liberated and free.”
“I know that by sharing my truth, I will be striking a chord with so so many women and men. I am not alone in this, and my goal is to help others while at the same time unshackle myself from this quiet hell I have been living in,” Lake wrote.
The actress’s post has since been flooded with an outpouring of support. In just over a week, she has received over 65,000 likes and over 7,000 comments of love and admiration. Go Ricki!
