09/12/2022

Genderless clothing label, Tanner Fletcher brought back high school prom nostalgia in a big way with its dream-like “Spring Fling” NYFW presentation. The brand’s take on the coming of age soiree was a true celebration of inclusivity—right down to the hair.

During Tanner Fletcher’s SS23 offering, all of the models rocked hairstyles that honored all genders, texture, and eras. As for the collection itself, it was filled with an intriguing mix of materials and patterns such as floral chenille, printed sequins, and bow and ribbon printed taffeta—all while staying true to the brand’s masculine and feminine identity.

The Mood

“Our collection this season is called ‘Spring Fling’, so it’s very much like a prom/school dance theme,” explains Fletcher Kasell, one part of the design duo. “We were trying to make a dream-like prom that doesn’t have the traditional labels or traditional expectations around it. So, we have models of all different skin tones, ages, sexualities, gender —really just creating an inclusive prom.”

Kasell and his design partner, Tanner Ritchie, tapped R + CO global educator Bobby Michael as lead hairdresser, who along with a talented team of hairstylists, created the models’ hair looks for the presentation.

The Products

“We used R + CO to achieve throwback looks with a modern twist—knowing they would last the entire evening,” Michael said.  These throwback hair looks included fluffy ‘60s hair, voluminous afros, Farrah Fawcett-inspired hair flip, and big ‘80s rocker styles.

To create all his hair magic for the presentation, Michael and his team had an arsenal of R + CO latest and greatest products on hand to create all these dreamy hairstyles, per R + CO’s Instagram

All of the models’ hair was prepped with RODEO Star Thickening Foam ($32.00) for dramatic volume, density, and lift. As for the pompadours, they were prepped with MOTORCYCLE Flexible Gel ($29.00). Hair was blown out and hand styled with ZIPPER Multitasking Styling Lotion ($32.00) and secured with OUTER SPACE Flexible Hairspray ($33.00) and VICIOUS Strong Hold Flexible Hairspray ($33.00). Frizz and flyaways were eliminated with DART Pomade Stick ($21.00). And, extra volume and texture was achieved with ZIG ZAG Root Teasing + Texture Spray ($33.00).
