Trying to use social media to market yourself and/or your salon? Sometimes it may seem like your best bet is doing a silly skit or a trending dance video, but what makes you stand out from the millions of other users doing the same sort of videos?

Jeffrey Lunnen interviewed Mackensie Mintz to talk about just that. What is the key to success on TikTok. With over a million followers on TikTok, Mackenzie knows what she is doing when it comes to ideating and executing videos. Her advice? Take a trend, interpret it your way and make it as authentically you as possible. Who are we to argue?

If you want to dive deeper with this advice from Mackensie as well as finding your community niche, finding a balance in what you want to post and what your community wants, working with brands and more, then head to wherever you stream and check out this week’s latest episode, “How To Interpret Trends Your Own Way”.

Maybe you will see Jeffrey joining the TikTok universe after all of the gems and secrets Mackensie gave to us. Tune it and turn the volume up!

“‘I’ve seen that sound five times in the last five minutes, I’ll make a video to it.’ And then I fit that to the niche of my followers.”

“Not just following the trends , so your videos go viral. Which can come easier than being authentic and your videos going viral. So I think just being true to yourself and posting a lot is kind of my best advice.”

“Engaging with your audience, whether or not that’s through social media or through whoever’s sitting in your chair or whoever you’re helping give your service to. Interacting with them and seeing their perspective on things and then allowing that to affect what you’re putting out there whether that is hair or a video on TikTok.”

“Don’t be shy to reach out, that’s kind of my number one thing…I think people don’t understand that there’s a lot of gifting opportunities and brands don’t lose money by doing that, they only gain money. Because if you have any sort of audience at all, you’re going to post about it and people will see it.”

Whoever said blondes have more fun is sadly mistaken. But, don’t just take that from us. The beautiful brownie batter hair color trend — which has taken over TikTok and Instagram in recent weeks — is here to stay all season long. Intrigued? Keep reading for everything you need to know about the viral brownie batter hair color, along with ample advice from pro stylists.

So, What Is Brownie Batter Hair?

Put simply, explains Los Angeles-based colorist Ashleigh Marie, brownie batter hair is best described as “a tone-on-tone brunette with a chocolatey hue.” (Sounds dreamy, we know!) Similarly, Lorena M. Valdes, a colorist at Maxine Salon in Chicago, tells The Tease that brownie batter hair is the “blonder version of ‘expensive blonde’ for brunettes.”

View this post on Instagram

A post shared by ✨BEST OF BALAYAGE & Hair (@bestofbalayage)

Oftentimes, explains Valdes, the color — “usually a warm caramel” — tends to work best on those with light to medium brown hair. Stylists will, of course, need to adjust the color according to the client’s natural skin tone and individual preferences.

However, keep in mind that your client does not necessarily need to (already) be brunette to partake in the trend. Per Valdes, folks with dark blonde or “bronde” strands can also have brownie batter hair.  In this case, the hue is best described as a “richer version” of the “expensive blonde” look but with softer, more subtle pops of blonde.

In order to achieve this look on clients, Valdes advises “using balayage and baby lights to provide the softest grow-out” so as to not over-saturate the hair. What’s more, this is especially important “because you want your client to feel like a brunette with [a] pop of color rather than overdoing it.” She continues, telling The Tease that, in  terms of technique, you’ll want to create “small ribbons of balayage” as well as  “soft, lived-in money pieces to frame the face.”

How to Maintain and Care For Brownie Batter Hair

Per Valdes, to keep your client’s brownie batter-hued hair looking and feeling healthy, have them come in every three months for a highlight and balayage. The pro also recommends scheduling appointments for toning every six weeks to help “maintain the warmth and shine.”

To extend the life of this beautiful hair color, Valdes says that using a heat protectant spray is key whenever heat styling is involved. You’ll also want to tell your client to wash their hair in “warm to cool water.” Lastly, your client can score extra brownie points (pun-intended, of course) if they use a moisture or protein mask every two weeks.

Nowadays, TikTok is the go-to destination for keeping up with all the latest trends in the fashion and beauty space.

As some of you may have seen recently, Hailey Bieber has been getting a lot of attention on TikTok for the “clean girl” aesthetic trend. For those unaware, this trend emphasizes the idea of being a “clean girl” by wearing things like slicked-back hairstyles, neutral clothing or easy-to-wear basics, and light makeup.

In most cases, the concept of less is more is important to keep in mind when trying to achieve the “clean girl” aesthetic. To help master the “clean girl” look, below, we rounded up four beauty products that you will be obsessed with!

ECO STYLE Argan Oil Gel

One way to help you get the “clean girl” aesthetic is by focusing on what kind of hairstyles you will be wearing. The slicked-back ponytail is a very popular option when trying to achieve this look.

To get the perfect slicked-back ponytail, you’ll need a good hair gel. Hair gel will help you to make sure your ponytail looks clean and stays in place all day by keeping your hair slicked back.

The Eco Style Argan oil gel will give you the perfect hair look for the “clean girl” aesthetic and will even help to nourish your hair.

Shop: Eco Style Argan Oil Gel, $3.32

COLOR WOW Extra Mistical Shine Spray

Since minimal is usually the word you should be keeping in mind when trying to achieve the “clean girl” aesthetic, just wearing your hair down and going for a simple hair look will do the trick as well.

However, that does not mean you shouldn’t add any products to your hair… So, I would recommend adding a shine spray.

A favorite hair product right now is this Extra Mistical Shine Spray by COLOR WOW. This spray will add a gorgeous shine to your hair and make it look flawless, in order to help you achieve the “clean girl” aesthetic.

Shop: COLOR WOW Extra Mistical Shine Spray, $29

L’Oréal True Match Lumi Glotion Natural Glow Enhancer

When trying to achieve the “clean girl” aesthetic, you should also try to stay away from makeup that will make your skin look cakey or dull. To achieve this look, you will want flawless and minimal makeup that will give your skin a natural glow.

If you are looking for the perfect product to add a light glow to your skin, try out this Lumi Glotion by L’Oréal.

It comes in different shades and will be the perfect addition to your makeup routine that you can add on top of foundation or by applying it right on your skin to get a gorgeous makeup look that will give you that “clean girl” vibe.

Shop: L’Oréal True Match Lumi Glotion Natural Glow Enhancer, $15.99

DIOR Addict Lip Glow Oil

Another part of your makeup routine to consider when going for the “clean girl” look is your lips. You will want to stay away from bold and bright lipstick colors.

The products you should be reaching for are lip oils, lip tints, or lip balms. These lip products will make your lips look more subtle and simple for your makeup look. If you have not already tried it, I recommend using the Dior Lip Glow Oil, which has been a very popular makeup product recently.

This product will be the perfect addition to your “clean girl” makeup routine and will give your lips subtle and natural-looking color.

Shop: DIOR Addict Lip Glow Oil, $38

Which of these products are you going to try? Let us know in the comments below!

This week we continued our TikTok X The Beauty Industry series. We have talked to multiple content creators on how TikTok has given them a platform to do what they love, but this week we talk with a salon professional that is using TikTok to up their game. Leda Fazal Goins is a master colorist and owner of her salon, Tone Hair Salon. She has been in the industry for 17 years.

Leda’s TikTok started out as an account for her salon, but she just recently changed it to her own name @ledafazal. Leda talks about how TikTok can be a good way to get big in the industry. She discloses how a lot of her clients come from TikTok and how she uses it to reach out to people across the country. Leda goes into how to make a viral TikTok as well as some tips and tricks to staying focused on hair videos and listening to your comments.

Leda discusses the importance of posting frequently and how she approaches the social platform. Don’t miss out on hearing how a salon professional is taking advantage of TikTok in the Beauty Industry.

“People want to know, how did you do that? Give them a quick tip. Keep it under 30 seconds, though.”

“If you don’t have your TikTok account already, go ahead and start it right now. And you know, you never know what’s gonna go viral.”

“But I’m here making videos to make it go with my niche of hair. So that’s where the creative part has to come in.”

Kellin Suede is this week’s guest on Volume Up by The Tease. Kellin Suede is a Black non-binary content creator from San Diego, California. Their alternative clothing shop, Kayelle Suede, is all about breaking the rules and standing out. While it began as a merch store for Kellin’s youtube channel, Kayelle Suede has now branched out into something bigger, offering makeup, jewelry, and art. Kellin’s overall goal for their brand is to reach those who feel alone and bring them to a safe space as the Suede family.

Kellin came on Volume Up to talk about beauty standards and how non-binary individuals have to navigate them. Kellin first explained to us their TikTok origins as well as how their store Kayelle Suede got started. As someone whose life revolves around the beauty and fashion industry, Kellin was open about what beauty means to them and how often it can be difficult in terms of social media with how others perceive them.

Kellin talks about their own personal experience as well as experiences they have seen over the years when it comes to gender identities and beauty. Kellin explains how it feels to be put in a box by others and how sometimes distancing yourself from what you love feels necessary to be correctly identified, as well as how as a beauty industry we can do better so that everyone feels comfortable in our industry.

Don’t miss out on hearing from Kellin and how they express themselves in the world of beauty!

“People really want you to be whatever they think that is. Whatever you say I identify as when they see that, they want you to be exactly that.”

“I think a lot of people need to be educated more. And talk with actual non-binary or just gender non-conforming people so that they can see it is a lot more than what you might expect.”

“Everyone’s relationship with gender is different and I don’t think that cis-gendered people always understand that.”

“The more confident that you are, the less people are going to try to attack you.”

In a world full of video platforms like TikTok and Instagram Reels, we’re constantly being served content about all subjects. But one app taking a more niche approach is Supergreat. Originally launched in 2018, the video app provides a space for the beauty community to come together. Featuring product reviews, shopping links, makeup tips and more, Supergreat is truly the perfect app for all beauty lovers.

Supergreat allows users to make their own videos, discover new products and beauty news, watch creators give reviews and discuss routines, redeem points towards free products and shop the brands you love the most.

The Beauty Lover’s Dream

By asking users to share their hair and skin type and color, the app is able to curate the content they’re served. Similar to TikTok, users can even pick what topics they’d like to explore and can subscribe to their favorite content creators. Supergreat even curates playlists of videos for users to enjoy and learn about different beauty techniques and products.

In addition to video content, Supergreat also gives users “supercoins” towards free products and allows them to shop straight from the app. Supercoins can be earned by entering challenges through creating and submitting videos, referring friends to the app, joining live events and winning trivia and, of course, by getting views on original content.

Lively Content

However, the biggest thing that sets Supergreat apart is its focus on livestreaming. Similar to Instagram Live, users are able to comment and interact with the app’s most popular hosts while they speak to their audience. Each stream is different, with subject matter ranging from makeup brush reviews and graphic eye liner tutorials to Q&A’s and product first impressions. The app’s homepage even features a “’Live Show Guide” that promotes each upcoming show.

Most recently, Supergreat has partnered with Ulta Beauty to produce daily livestreams that last anywhere from 15 minutes to over an hour. Not only do the special streams let users shop straight from ulta.com, but they include 20 of the app’s biggest hosts and promote exclusive product drops as well. The partnership is currently set to last 14 weeks.

Needless to say, if you’re a beauty lover looking for fun content about products and techniques, Supergreat is perfect for you!

Last week, rising pop star Olivia Rodrigo released her much-anticipated debut album, SOUR. The album, which features her first hit single “Driver’s License,” has taken the charts and social media by storm. Unsurprisingly, TikTokers have been creating fun content using her new music. One trend that’s been going around the app is a challenge that includes Rodrigo’s songs, “Traitor” and “Brutal.” The short videos show content creators crying to the ballad and then transitioning into full glam as the sound switches to the rock song.

Featuring everything from bright eye shadow and glowing skin to sharp eye liner and bold lips, the results of the challenge are seriously impressive. The mashup has been used over 800 times on TikTok, but here are some of our faves!

Which makeup artists do you love on TikTok? Share with us in the comments!

While TikTok is best known for dancing challenges, pranks and music, the app has recently seen a surge in videos revealing beauty hacks for everything from foundation to mascara. As someone who is always searching for ways to make my makeup routine quicker and easier, these videos are everything. However, some of them can seem too good to be true. So, I decided to put them to the test and find out if these tricks are a hack or wack.

I did an entire makeup look based on TikTok hacks, and here’s what happened.

Beauty Blender Cleanser

@kammymakora

And it’s cheap too sooo😳👍🏼!!#beautyhacks

♬ original sound – 𝓚 ♡

First, I tried @kammymakora’s beauty blender hack. In her TikTok, she washes her beauty blender in a mixture of olive oil and dish soap, resulting in the sponge looking as good as new. It’s supposed to be a cheap alternative that works even better than other brush and sponge cleansers.

However, when I tested out the formula myself, my beauty blender was left still dirty, and it was nearly impossible to rinse out all of the suds from the mixture. After a hopeful try, I’ll be sticking with baby shampoo to wash my blender.

Powder First Foundation

Originally from user @jaridamat, this makeup hack says if you apply moisturizer, translucent powder, setting spray and primer before your foundation, your makeup will stay on all day without creasing.

This trick went viral on TikTok for the supposed amazing results, but when I gave it shot, it left me disappointed. Instead of my skin feeling flawless and smooth, it felt cakey and thick. There was too much product on my face, and I could actually see creasing after just an hour or so.

Q-Tip Lip

@blossom

Don’t be afraid to be bold! Here’s a #hack to keep lipstick on your lips and not on your teeth!💄 #learnfromme #beautyhacks

♬ ALL IN – ZaeHD & CEO

The gist for this hack from @blossom is that using a Q-tip to keep your lips separated will stop lipstick from transferring to your teeth and all over your mouth. While I think this is a good hack in theory, it doesn’t really work in practice.

The Q-tip makes it so the corners of your lips don’t receive color, and I actually saw some product on my teeth shortly after applying it. So, I’m definitely sticking to my technique of simply blotting the inside of my lips to eliminate transfer.

Hack or Wack: Wack

Blended Bright Lip

For this next hack, @123go encourages users to add concealer around their lips to tone down a bright lipstick color. At first, I thought this would make my lip line disappear into my foundation, but the hack actually surprised me and worked! The lipstick and concealer blended perfectly and left me with a more muted, neutral color.

Hack or Wack: Hack

Creative Concealer

Next, I tried a hack from user @classycleanchic. In her short video, she shows viewers a new way to apply undereye concealer. Instead of applying the product in a triangular shape, she places it by her nose and near the corner of her eye and blends it all in.

This hack definitely worked for me, as the product blended in very nicely and further out than my normal technique. It helps highlight the undereye area and provides a good base for actual highlighter.

Game-Changing Eyeliner

https://www.tiktok.com/@thiccyhippie/video/6821222118840110342?_d=secCgsIARCbDRgBIAIoARI%2BCjylgNOtC0nXlIwotC0E42kldoaMjf7w08bCq6wlz8KZyHnnV3GTc7d80v7OuH9qYFQkypPNe04oAmCC3hYaAA%3D%3D&language=en&preview_pb=0&share_item_id=6821222118840110342&timestamp=1596140277&tt_from=copy&u_code=db3b1fma4i7ebb&user_id=6796850747058226181&utm_campaign=client_share&utm_medium=ios&utm_source=copy&source=h5_m

If you’re someone with hooded eyelids, then this hack from @thiccyhippie is for you! The trick is to draw your wing from the corner of your eye, place little dots from the wing to your lash line (while your eyes are open) and then fill it in. When your eyes are closed, the eyeliner will look a little funny, but when they’re open, you’ll have a perfect wing.

I’ve never been able to construct the perfect winged eyeliner, but this method actually worked! It’s an easy way to create a wing, and the technique really fixes the issue of eyeliner disappearing in hooded eyelids. I will definitely be using this hack moving forward.

Hack or Wack: Hack

3 Step Mascara

@mirellabelle

How to make your lashes look like falsies without falsies 👀✨ #beautyhacks #beautytips #fyp #foryou #makeup

♬ original sound – Mirella

I’m always looking for new hacks for mascara to maximize my lash length and volume. TikTok user @mirellabelle’s hack shows viewers how to apply mascara in a three-step process: coat lash tips first, then the middle and then go down to the root.

Not only will it give you fuller lashes, but it helps keep them looking on point throughout the day. After trying this hack, my lashes looked longer, and my curl lasted all day long. 10/10 recommend.
