With last night’s Emmy Award win for lead comedy actress, Jean Smart is the first and only female performer to take home an Emmy for every season of a show. The “Hacks” star stunned on the red carpet and during her acceptance speech giving a little nod to Deborah Vance with her hair, worn up and teased dramatically.
Smart’s hairstylist Richard Marin clarifies that real actresses were actually being referenced with the look, explaining it was “inspired by the classic actresses of the 50/60s. A French twist updo.. a modern take of Audrey Hepburn and Grace Kelly…” He adds that the hair was “easily pulled up with volume and secured with pins for an easy but controlled look.”
Keep reading for the techniques and amika products Marin used to create this winning style.
Get the Look:
- Blow-dry damp hair using Brooklyn Bombshell Blowout Spray, creating as much volume as possible with a round brush and blow dryer.
- Once the blowout is complete, spray Soulstruck Nourishing Dry Hair Mask throughout the hair to create texture and achieve a “one day old hair” feel.
- Use a large curling iron on the ends of the hair to make them more malleable for shaping the French twist. Place pins along the back hairline to secure the style into place.
- Spray Rising Star Volumizing Finishing Spray to set the style.
- Finish with The Shield Anti-Humidity Spray to help protect the style from humidity.
- Apply tiny drops of Superfruit Star Lightweight Hair Styling Oil to the ends of the tendrils falling from the French twist for a polished finish.
