“Tron: Ares” and “The Morning Show” star Greta Lee stunned at last night’s Academy Museum Gala with an incredible sculptural updo by celebrity hairstylist Jenny Cho. Cho, working with Schwarzkopf Professional, managed to perfectly balance timeless elegance with an unexpected, contemporary twist.

The hairstyle was inspired by Lee’s Dior gown, by frequent collaborator Jonathan Anderson, which featured classic, elegant volume below the waist and a beautiful deep-plunging lace neckline that draped over her shoulders. The result was a sculptural hair moment that captured both structure and movement. (Plus our attention!)

Read on for a breakdown directly from Cho.

Get the Look:

  • Prep: On towel-dried hair, Jenny applied Schwarzkopf Professional OSiS+ Grip to create styling control and layered Schwarzkopf Professional Fibre Clinix Fiber Sealer throughout to protect against heat during styling.
  • Blow-dry: She parted the hair in the center, then blow-dried using a mixed boar-bristle brush. Starting at the nape, she smoothed each section flat from top to bottom, working upward to just above the ears and beneath the occipital bone. She then moved to the sides, drying them tight to the head and away from the face to achieve a sleek, sculpted surface.
  • Structure: Once dry, Jenny sectioned off the bottom horizontally from ear to ear and the front sides up to the ears. Using a tail comb, she created a half-circle section at the crown and applied Schwarzkopf Professional OSiS+ Texture Craft before braiding the section. After securing the braid with a small elastic, she dusted it with Schwarzkopf Professional OSiS+ Dust It, gently spread it with her fingers, and shaped it into a flat bun at the occipital bone — establishing the base anchor of the updo.
  • Volume + Texture: On the remaining loose hair, Jenny applied Schwarzkopf Professional OSiS+ Dust It, once more and tightly teased the roots for about two inches, loosely teasing the lengths to achieve a soft, cotton-candy texture. She then worked a small amount of Schwarzkopf Professional OSiS+ Thrill into the nape area, gathering the teased section loosely upward and securing the ends with a small clear elastic. Rolling the ends inward, she twisted them into a polished rounded shape and pinned them into the flat braided base.
  • Detailing: A pea-sized amount of Schwarzkopf Professional OSiS+ Thrill  was applied to the sides before bringing each side section back toward the base. These were twisted together into a subtle knot, leaving a few ends out to maintain a modern, effortless finish.
  • Finish: Jenny refined and shaped the updo before setting the look with Schwarzkopf Professional OSiS+ Freeze, ensuring touchable hold and red-carpet shine.

We cover a lot of stylish events on our website, but very few get our team as excited as the Met Gala. The star-studded soiree, which raises money for the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Costume Institute, is always a fashion (and beauty!) feast for the eyes. Every first Monday in May, all of our favorite celebrities and industry insiders descend upon the iconic Met steps donning dazzling couture ensembles paired with head-turning hair looks. And this year’s event, which was co-chaired by Jennifer Lopez, Zendaya, Chris Hemsworth, and Bad Bunny, was certainly no different.

The 2024 Met Gala celebrated the opening of the Costume Institute’s spring exhibition, titled “Sleeping Beauties: Reawakening Fashion”, which will be “visually united by iconography related to nature, which will serve as a metaphor for the fragility and ephemerality of fashion and a vehicle to examine the cyclical themes of rebirth and renewal,” per the Met’s official website. As for the dress code for the big night? The theme was “Garden of Time, which was inspired by J.G. Ballard’s 1962 short story of the same name.

As to be expected, many celebrities did serve up florals in all forms with their ensembles—think avant-garde floral-embellished gowns, intricate floral headpieces, and pretty much every type of floral pattern that you can imagine. However, others went the unexpected route opting for custom creations made out of sand, pearl, wood, and even archival wallpaper, and some, like Zendaya, even found time to serve two show-stopping looks on the red carpet.

For us, of course, all of the incredible hair looks were truly the star of the show. Met attendees and their talented glam teams served up so much outstanding hair inspiration, in the form of extra-long ethereal waves, towering sculptural updos, ultra-sleek wet look hair, and so many beautiful statement headpieces. Keep scrolling for a look at our favorite hairstyles from the 2024 Met Gala, hand-picked by our editors.

Gwendoline Christie

The Look: a gravity-defying abstract blonde cloud of hair that was styled by hairstylist Dale Delaporte with hair direction by hairstylist Duffy.

Kelly Ehlers, The Tease Co-founder and co-host of Volume Up podcast: “I loved the avant-garde vibe. To me, her hair matched the theme perfectly. Her hair looks to be ‘too fragile to hang for fear of falling apart’ much like the delicate collection pieces in this year’s Costume Institute exhibition.”

FKA Twigs

The Look:  a sculptural updo with basket-weave detailing and lab-grown diamond embellishments that came courtesy of hairstylist Louis Souvestre

Adriana Sarmineto, Social Media Editor: “I think FKA Twigs hairstyle was one of the most creative and unique looks from last night’s Met Gala. Her head was adorned in diamond studs that served as an extension of her Stella McCartney lab-grown diamond embellished outfit and accented her show-stopping sculptural updo, which was created by London-based hairstylist Louis Souvestre. The basket-weave hairstyle sat on her head like a crown, truly making her look like a goddess and the rat-tails gave her that alternative and edgy feel that is authentic to her personal style.”

Tyla

The Look: a wet-look layered bob that came courtesy of hairstylist Lacy Redway

Monica Hickey, The Tease Co-founder: “Her sculpted sand-covered Balmain gown was so good and her short wet hair look was super chic. On her, the hair is perfect, but if you take inspiration, you have to be careful so you don’t end up looking like a ‘90s mom. Also, shoutout to her makeup artist for the sand-like glitter on her shoulders!”

Greta Lee

The Look: a edgy shaggy mullet (shullet) with choppy baby bangs that came courtesy of hairstylist Jenny Cho, who used Fekkai products to execute the look

Jeffrey Lunnen, The Tease Editor-in-Chief and co-host of Volume Up podcast: “Greta Lee and her team, which includes celebrity hairstylist and Fekkai Five Collective member Jenny Cho, have fun on the red carpet and I appreciate that. For the 2024 Met Gala, her hair (yes, a wig!) was cut and styled into a playful shullet with piecey baby bangs. I think it was the perfect compliment to her custom Loewe gown.”

Emily Ratajkowski

The Look: a middle-parted spiky updo that was styled by hairstylist James Pecis

Erin Kiely, Sales and Partnership Coordinator: “Her sheer vintage Versace gown was stunning but for me, her fanned-out spiky updo is the focal point. Her hair stood out to me because the harsh lines contrast with her beaded dress in such an unexpected way.”

Alia Bhatt

The Look: a loose textured updo featuring woven braids and gemstone embellishments that was styled by hairstylist Amit Thakur

Camille Nzengung, Hair Features Editor: “I seriously thought that Bollywood actress Alia Bhatt looked like she had stepped out of a painting when she arrived on the Met Gala carpet. So I was very happy to learn that her hairstylist Amit Thakur actually took a lot of inspiration from Renaissance paintings when he crafted her dreamy updo. The details of her hair are just so beautiful—from the intricately woven braids to the regal hair shape and all of the many ropes of gemstones decorating her strands. I love how much thought was put into her hairstyle as well as her whole look, which paid homage to nature’s beauty—the earth, sky, and sea—as well the timelessness of Indian artisanship. Her custom-made, hand-embroidered Sabyasachi sari is easily the most beautiful sari that I have ever seen. Plus, I always love a good cultural reference at these kinds of high-profile events.”

Anok Yai

The Look: a super sleek curled pixie styled by hairstylist Jawara

Madeline Hickey, Digital Media Producer: “When you are dripping in crystals, your hair has to perfectly complement the look. Anok and her hairstylist Jawara not only understood the assignment but exceeded it. Her sleek yet tousled short cut not only brought a touch of Hollywood glam but also featured a perfect kiss curl. I saw many stars rock the asymmetrical pixie on the Met Gala carpet, and I could not be more behind it.”

“Past Lives” lead actress and Golden Globes Nominee Greta Lee looked like an absolute vision on last night’s red carpet. Teaming up with long-time hairstylist Jenny Cho, the pair opted for Old Hollywood as the inspo with glamorous, deep-set waves and maximum shine. Cho brought the look together with Olivia Garden brushes and appliances, including the SuperHP Dryer.

Keep scrolling for the breakdown!

Get the Look:

  1. To achieve this look, Jenny began by applying styling mousse on towel-dried hair and brushed it through with the Olivia Garden iDetangle Brush to evenly distribute the product and detangle the hair before the blow drying process.
  2. Next, Jenny used the Olivia Garden Style-Up Comb Folding Brush to give Greta a side-part.
  3. Starting from the nape, Jenny used the Olivia Garden SuperHP High Performance Professional Hair Dryer and Olivia Garden Ceramic + Ion Round Thermal Hairbrush 3/8” to blow dry the hair and worked through the front to create rounded and beveled ends to set.
  4. Once the hair was dried, Jenny used the Olivia Garden Titanium + Ion 1” Professional Curling Iron to create the old Hollywood waves. She then pinned each curl and let it cool down to set. She then loosened up the waves, sculpted the curls, and pinned and shaped the look into place.

The 2024 Golden Globes officially kicked off awards season on Sunday night, bringing together Hollywood’s biggest stars to celebrate the very best in film and television. This year’s ceremony was held in Los Angeles and hosted by comedian Jo Koy.

The star-studded affair was full of memorable moments, most notably, some historic wins from a number of talented actors and actresses. Ali Wong and Steven Yeun won Best Actress and Best Actor in a Limited Series for their performances in Netflix’s Beef, becoming the first and second Asian American actors to, respectively, win in their categories. Also, Lily Gladstone became the first Indigenous woman to win Best Actress in a Drama Motion Picture for her performance in Killers of the Flower Moon.

2023 Oscars best actress nominee Ana de Armas wasn’t channeling Marilyn Monroe on the champagne carpet. She was channeling Cher!

According to celebrity hairstylist Jenny Cho, Ana’s Oscars hair was inspired by her Louis Vuitton gown — Cher too, but more on that below. “The bottom of the dress was embellished with what looked like fallen flower petals and morning dew – that’s where I drew my inspiration for her hair. I wanted to showcase her beautiful brown hair against all the lighter palettes. I decided on soft, effortless waves worn falling behind the shoulders and back. The look is powerful yet soft, beautiful and feminine.” The style came together with René Furterer styling products and T3 Micro tools.

Video via Jenny Cho’s Instagram

Keep scrolling for Cho’s step-by-steps to recreate Ana de Armas’s effortless Oscars hair.

Get the Look:

  1. On towel dried hair, I gently brushed out the hair out with a T3 detangling brush to ensure the product could be applied evenly.
  2. Next, I applied René Furterer STYLE Blowout Balm ($34.00) to smooth the hair, and misted the René Furterer STYLE Protect Thermal Protecting Spray ($36.00), to protect strands from the heat.
  3. Then, I blow dried her hair with a T3 blow-dryer and used a T3 round brush adding slight body and volume to the crown area, and to smooth the tips.
  4. Hair extensions were added for length, and I cut them to the desired length. We had Cher in mind while this was happening. 😉
  5. Starting at the nape, I used a curling iron to create soft, lived-in waves. I pinned each curl and let them cool, to set for the night ahead.
  6. Once the hair was set, I loosened up the curls and misted the hair with René Furterer STYLE Shine Mist ($34.00) and finalized the curls with René Furterer STYLE Finishing Spray ($34.00).

If we’re in an era of too much television, there’s still not enough. Our favorite stars showed up on a big way for last night’s 74th Annual Emmy Awards. Thankfully, the hair teams did not disappoint with looks that left us losing it in our group chat. The Euphoria girlies gave us Old Hollywood and Old Hollywood gave us Euphoria. (See THE INCREDIBLE Sheryl Lee Ralph below…) Up was down, down was up and everything was right!

Ahead, we rounded up the best hair moments from the 2022 Emmys red carpet, awards show and more.

Quinta Brunson

Hairstylist Alexander Armand ensured Quinta Brunson was ready for her moment, looking every bit the Hollywood icon when she accepted her Emmy for “Abbott Elementary” thanks to products from Olivia Garden and Maui Moisture. See below to get the look.

I created long voluminous waves with a subtle yet flirty side part. I started by washing and conditioning Quinta’s hair with the Maui Moisture Castor & Neem Oil Shampoo Conditioner, a duo that works perfectly for creating and sealing in moisture to give volume to textured hair for styling. I next applied Maui Moisture’s Flexible Hold Coconut Curl Mousse to establish the direction of curl flow.

I then used the Olivia Garden Ceramic + Ion Blow Dryer with the Olivia Garden NanoThermic Paddle Brush to blow out Quinta’s hair with speed and efficiency. I dried the hair on a cool setting to set the look while retaining moisture and shine. The mousse is an excellent styling agent because its lightweight formulation leaves hair soft and manageable for further styling.

After, I teased the hair to accentuate her face with the Olivia Garden CarboSilk CS-C1 Comb, placed a flirty part on the right side and created voluminous curls with the Olivia Garden Ceramic + Ion 1’ Flat Iron to seal her hair follicles with the right amount of regulated heat. This flat iron allows me to curl her hair with the perfect amount of bounce and wave. I completed the look with a light application of Maui Moisture Vanilla Bean Weightless Oil Mist and combed through with the Olivia Garden CarboSilk CS-C6 Comb to de-frizz, add shine and bring the old Hollywood look together.

Sheryl Lee Ralph

Celebrity hairstylist and “Abbott Elementary” Hair Department Lead, Moira “Fingaz” Frazier really made the original “Dream Girl,” and TV veteran, even dreamier with a waist-grazing braid embellished with more crystals than anyone has any business counting.

Of the look, Frazier commented on Instagram “When Sheryl Lee Ralph asked me to do her hair for Emmys I knew this would be a magical moment. And after speaking with her daughter Coco about the styling direction we were on the same page as to how her look should be! This was amazing teamwork, she was truly the STAR of the night. A rare gem to the world and a true diamond hence the look .” A winning look for an Emmy winner! Christina Joseph assisted Frazier with styling Sheryl’s hair with glam by Mila Thomas.

Zendaya

To go full Grace Kelly and then some, Zendaya turned to celebrity hairstylist Tony Medina. To get this timeless look, Medina used some thoroughly modern products from Tangle Teezer. See how he got the look for the, now, two-time Emmy Winner, below.

I started by using the @TangleTeezerUS The Ultimate Styler, which perfectly added volume while giving hair a smooth and shiny finish. I strategically placed two clip in tracks of the @HiddenCrownHair extensions in the center of the back of her head for fullness. I gave them a trim to match her hair length and pin curled them to blend in with her head of curls. To secure them, I added a bit of teasing at the root using the skinny side of Tangle Teezer’s The Wide Tooth Comb.

When setting Z’s curls, I used a little bit of @AuntJackiesCurlsAndCoils Frizz Patrol Mousse on each section to add shine and hold. Once I gently brushed out her curls with Tangle Teezer’s The Ultimate Styler, I used Tangle Teezer’s The Wide Tooth Comb to create a waved shape towards the bottom of her style. The opposite side of the dual sided comb was perfect for teasing and creating just the right amount of volume.

For final touches, I used Aunt Jackie’s Slicked Flexible Styling Glue to clean her hair line up and give it a sleek look. To pull the front back tightly and for hair decor, I tied a black silk ribbon around the entire style to bring the look together. Lastly, to polish up the entire look, I used Aunt Jackie’s Shine Boss to give a glossy finish.

Zenday’s Emmys glam was done by Sheika Daley using Lancôme.

Lizzo

We love a top knot! Longtime hairstylist Shelbeniece Swan grabbed SexyHair products to create this look. Below, all the deets directly from the source.

I began by shampooing Lizzo’s tresses with the Boost Up Shampoo and then infused maximum hydration with the Boost Up conditioner. Lizzo’s curls were so soft and supple from the clarifying and hydration of both products. I then rinsed and applied a leave in conditioner tri- wheat leave in conditioner. I used this to prepare her hair for straightening while adding strength.

As I prepared her hair I moved into blow drying and creating the base for the too knot. I secured with a coated elastic pony tail holder and began to create the knot while applying sexy Hair Big Weatherproof spray. This spray is great for all weather and is humidity friendly.

After securing the knot with hair pins I used end curls to perfect her tendrils and spayed them with Sexy Hair Healthy So touchable spray. This spray gives maximum yet soft hold. Lizzo was red carpet ready and her tresses were camera ready!

Jennifer Coolidge

Just wow! Marc Mena delivered a career-defining hairstyle for a career-defining win. Bardot who? People are going to be asking for the Coolidge. To get the look, Mena used Better Not Younger products. Everything you need to know from the brand:

Begin with Wakeup Call Volumizing Shampoo and Conditioner. Lift Me Up Hair Thickener was used all over, and then blown out with a medium-sized ceramic brush, and rollers were put in.

When the rollers came out, Mena protected Coolidge’s strands with No Remorse Heat Protection & Taming Spray before he took a 1.5” curling iron and gave the hair a soft wave at the ends.

Wake Up Call High Hold Thickening Hairspray was used to hold the look together, lasting all night.

Jean Smart

Robert Vetica was inspired by Marilyn Monroe’s iconic pin curls and wanted to modernize for Jean Smart. Since Marylin is known for her iconic pin curls on the red carpet, Robert wanted to reference the influential look with Jean. See how Robert created the look with Olivia Garden and R+Co products.

I started out by spraying R+Co Dallas Thickening Spray throughout Jean‘s hair, then I used the Olivia Garden Ceramic + Ion Hair Dryer along with Olivia Garden EcoHair Bamboo Combo Vent Round Brush in size 3, to create volume and shine from the root. I focused on creating a low side part to lift the hair starting at the route, similar to Marilyn’s go-to style.

After starting on the side part, I began sectioning the hair into small parts in order to style the hair with the Olivia Garden Ceramic + Ion Flat Iron, a brilliantly engineered multi-use tool that allowed me to straighten and curl the hair as needed. It enabled me to achieve that perfect Marilyn look without the hassle of going back and forth between a curling iron and a flat iron, due to its streamlined and lightweight design with rounded edges. I sprayed each section with R+Co Freeway Defining Spray Gel to set the look.

“Once the hair was perfectly locked in place, I used the Olivia Garden Style Up Teasing Brush to brush, tease, and finish the look with ease. Finally, I polished off the look with R+Co Featherlight Hairspray for hold and shine.

Hannah Einbinder

Brian Fisher delivered “all the big shining energy last night” for “Hacks” star Hannah Einbinder, twice! We can’t pick a favorite. Glam by Molly Greenwald with Shiseido.

Janelle James

Her hair was perfection by Faith C with Straight Request Hair Spray, OGX Nourishing + Coconut Oil Weightless Hydrating Oil, Design Essential Finishing Spray, Kenra Volumizing Powder 14, the Bio Ionic Curling Iron and Babyliss Flat Iron. Color by Dustin Von Osborne. Glam by Fatimot Isadare. P.S. Can we give it up for the ladies of “Abbott Elementary”?!

Rosario Dawson

Finally, a “wet look” that we can get behind! Celebrity hairstylist Clariss Anya Rubenstein delivered for Rosario Dawson with Sol de Janeiro and their “magic Brazilian Glossy hair oil.”

Meg Stalter

“Hacks” star Meg Stalter continues to be the moment. Clayton Hawkins styled her lengthy locks to perfection with Tangle Teezer and Living Proof products. Ashley Grossblatt assisted Hawkins. Glam by Melissa Hernandez.

Maude Apatow

Peter Lux brought the “Old Hollywood” to young Hollywood in a big way. Technically for an after party, this look was every bit as good as anything that we saw walk the gold carpet or on screen during the show.

HoYeon Jung

The “Squid Games” star was coiffed to perfection by Jenny Cho using Augustinus Bader products. The barrette detail? Next level! Glam by Nina Park and nails by Yoko Sakakura.

Sasheer Zamata

Set to stun! Pictured with bestie Nicole Byer, actress and comedian Sasheer Zamata did not come to play.

Kaley Cuoco

Celebrity hairstylist Christine Symonds created Kaley Cuoco’s low-chignon-pony with the help of Clairol Professional products. To get the look, see Christine’s tips below:

First, I prepped Kaley’s hair with Clairol Professional Thermal Shine Spray and Leave-In Styling Treatment. These products are essential to create any look!

Then, I gave her a voluminous blow dry. I pulled her hair back in a loose low pony but didn’t pull all the way through on the second wrap to leave a knot. I kept out her bangs and added some Thermal Shine Spray to make sure everything stayed in place. That’s it, the look is super simple and effortless!

Glam by Jamie Greenberg.

Sydney Sweeney

We love a red carpet reveal! Hairstylist Glen Coco Oropeza was responsible for Sweeney’s big chop, using Nexxus Haircare, Shark Beauty and The Hair Shop.

Selma Blair

Short, slicked back and oh, so chic by Jenny Cho. Not a hair out of place for the actress and disability rights activist. Glam by Kara Yoshimoto Bua.

Molly Shannon

Confusingly, TV (and film) legend Molly Shannon credited two hairstylists for her look. Bravo to whoever is responsible. Someone should claim this look. It’s everything!

Sandra Oh

BODY by Sascha Breuer! To get the look, Breuer used Davines products. From Instagram:

Sandra has an incredible natural hair texture that I wanted enhance without changing the natural feel & texture. I achieved this by using the nozzle and heat of the Dyson to amplify her natural wave band; then sealing the outer layer with the GHD curling iron.

Ayo Edebiri

We’re saying “YAS, chef” to hairstylist Marcia Hamilton‘s work for “The Bear” star. This piecey lob was so chic! Glam by Joanna Simkin, assisted by Sravya Vatsavai.
